MEXICO CITY, Mexico, May 23, 2011.-A teenager accused of extortion was sentenced to 15 years in prison in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, penalty to be served in a center for minors, state prosecutors said today.

Young, 15, received the maximum penalty for juveniles accused of extorting money from nine people, businessmen and taxi drivers, who demanded money in exchange for protection during August 2010, the agency said in a statement.

He was arrested along with three adults then indicted on charges of extortion, possession of weapons of fire and health (drug).

The conviction is the first ruling against a child since the entry into force of state law to toughen penalties for juvenile offenders, four years ago. However, until its official publication in 2010 were not implemented effectively. Previously

children 14 to 16 could be jailed up to three years and those aged 16 to five, was the most serious offense committed against society. All children under 14 can not be held under any circumstances.

Currently more than 60 teenagers expect a sentence in the prison, according to these provisions.

The northern state has been hardest hit by violence between drug gangs unleashed in Mexico, as it accumulates about 30 percent of the approximately 40,000 murders in the country since December 2006.

Only in the town of Ciudad Juárez, the most violent city in Mexico, have been killed over 8,500 people since then.
